  These songs were an experiment in "on-the-road recording". I was on tour playing in a quartet that was backing the "Eels with Strings" tour of Europe and various continents around 2006 or so, and when we would arrive in a town, I'd go right to the venue and find the most remote dressing room space and set up the microphone. Then I'd work on these recordings for a couple hours before soundcheck. If there happened to be a piano anywhere backstage, I'd sneak in with the laptop, make up a piano part on the fly, record it and get out before anyone came in the room. It was fun. (At the end of "Unplayable Card", you can hear when the tour manager interrupted me mid-recording to see if anyone was in the shower. I loved the ambience of the hallway when he opened the door, so I left it in. And the train in "I Can't Wait" was a train that would go right under my hotel room where we were staying in this remote European location. So I stuck the microphone out the window on this rainy afternoon and recorded it.) I really didn't know how to record anything at that time, which any audiophile can discern immediately, but whatever.
